Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: "Cosi fan tutte"Dramma giocoso in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte | In Italian with German surtitles | Running time approx. 3.5 hours | One intermission
Fiordiligi, Dorabella, Ferrando, Guglielmo – four people are ready for a break; they yearn for a holiday and adventure. Couples form, the island idyll seems perfect, but perhaps the puppet masters Alfonso and Despina have orchestrated everything perfectly, and the paradisiacal facade has a dark side? The waves of love are followed by changes that cause emotions to overflow – and finally, disillusionment, a cold shower. Are we on an island of the blessed? Or must we come to the realization that we are far more susceptible to temptation than we care to admit?

Gewandhaus (Großer Saal)
19.30
Choir and organ concert: "By the Rivers of Babylon"Everyone knows the pop hit "By the Rivers of Babylon" by Boney M. Its origin, however, lies in one of the most poignant texts in the Bible: Psalm 137. This lament describes the longing of the Jewish people in Babylonian exile for their lost homeland. In 586 BC, Jerusalem was conquered and largely destroyed by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar II. For centuries, this text has moved composers – from Baroque psalm settings to the present day. This special organ and choral concert for Pentecost Sunday was conceived at the initiative of Gewandhaus organist Michael Schönheit. Choral and organ works by Johann Adam Reincken, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt, and Gewandhaus composer Arvo Pärt are juxtaposed with spirituals and the well-known pop version.

Georges Bizet: "Carmen"Opéra comique in four acts | Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, after the novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée | In French with German surtitles | Running time approx. 3 hours | One intermission
For Carmen, her freedom is the highest good. She refuses to submit to the constraints of society. The conformist Sergeant Don José is fascinated by this woman who simply takes what she wants. He gives up everything for her: his childhood sweetheart Micaëla, his position in the military, and even joins a smuggling gang. He is obsessed with Carmen, who soon loses interest in him and falls for the death-defying bullfighter Escamillo. José is desperate and wants Carmen back at any cost.
With his opera "Carmen," Georges Bizet achieved a true coup in 1875. To this day, it remains one of the most frequently performed operas of all time. Enchanting melodies and captivating rhythms meet a strong title character. She represents the antithesis of the passive, self-sacrificing female figures that dominated 19th-century opera.
Australian director Lindy Hume, who has already staged "Don Pasquale" and "La Cenerentola" at the Leipzig Opera, sees Carmen not as the man-eating vamp she is often portrayed as, but as a self-determined woman. She draws parallels between Carmen and Don Giovanni: both characters are ahead of their time in their independence and welcome death as the final expression of their unconditional will to freedom.
